    Protecting Your Lungs Over a Trades Career

    The dust and fumes you breathe on site are among the biggest long-term threats to a trades career, and the cruel part is that they cause no pain at the time. The harm builds quietly over years and often does not show up until decades later, when the lungs are already scarred. Beyond the cancer risk covered elsewhere, ordinary trade dust causes a range of lasting lung disease: silicosis, occupational asthma and the gradual breathlessness of chronic obstructive lung disease. Almost all of it is preventable by keeping the dust out of your airways. This guide is about your breathing over a whole career, why the lifetime dose is what counts, and how to keep it low.‍‌‌‌‌​‌‌‌​‌‌‌​​​‌​​‌‌‌​‌​‌​‌​‌‌​‌‍

    Why the lifetime dose is the whole game

    Lung damage from dust is cumulative. It is not the one big day that scars your lungs; it is the sum of hundreds of ordinary days of breathing fine dust, year after year. That is what makes it so easy to ignore, because nothing feels wrong while the damage is being done, and so important to take seriously now, because the dose you breathe today is what counts in twenty or thirty years. You cannot undo an exposure, but every day you keep the dust down is a day you are not adding to the total. Protecting your lungs is a habit you build before you can feel the need for it.

    The main dust and fume hazards

    • Respirable crystalline silica. Released by cutting, grinding, drilling or breaking concrete, brick, stone, tile and engineered stone. The fine dust scars the lung, causing silicosis, which is permanent, and is a recognised cause of lung cancer. It is controlled to a low airborne limit that varies by province; in Ontario, for example, the limit for respirable quartz is 0.10 mg/m3 averaged over eight hours. Engineered (artificial) stone is especially dangerous because of its very high silica content.
    • Asbestos. Found in older buildings, in insulation, floor tiles, textured ceilings, pipe lagging and cement board. The fibres lodge deep in the lung and cause asbestos-related lung disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma. There is no known safe level; the national exposure limit is set very low at 0.1 fibres per cubic centimetre averaged over eight hours, and a survey is required before renovating or demolishing older buildings.
    • Wood dust. From sawing, sanding and machining, especially hardwoods and engineered boards. It is a recognised cause of occupational asthma and is linked to cancers of the nose and sinuses with long exposure.
    • Welding fume, diesel exhaust and isocyanates. Welding fume and diesel engine exhaust irritate and damage the lungs over time. Isocyanates, found in some two-part paints, foams and coatings, are a leading cause of occupational asthma and can sensitise you so that even tiny later exposures trigger an attack.

    Silicosis, occupational asthma and COPD, in plain terms

    • Silicosis is permanent scarring of the lung from silica dust. It cannot be reversed, only prevented, and it raises the risk of other serious lung disease.
    • Occupational asthma is asthma caused or made worse by something you breathe at work, such as wood dust, isocyanates or other sensitisers. Once you are sensitised, even small exposures can trigger it, which can force you out of certain work. Caught early, removing the exposure can stop it worsening.
    • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is long-term breathlessness from damaged airways. Years of dust and fume add to the risk, and smoking on top of dust exposure is far worse than either alone.

    How to keep the dust out of your lungs

    • Stop the dust at the source. Cut wet or use on-tool dust extraction for silica. Use local exhaust ventilation or fume extraction for welding and for spraying. Stopping dust at the source beats catching it at your face.
    • Never dry-cut or dry-sweep silica. Dry-cutting concrete or stone produces the worst exposure of all, and dry-sweeping just throws the settled dust back into the air. Use water, a vacuum with the right filter, or extraction.
    • Survey before you disturb old material. Assume older buildings contain asbestos until a survey says otherwise. Never cut, sand or break suspect material without proper assessment and licensed controls.
    • Wear a properly fitted respirator. A loose mask or the wrong grade is close to no protection. Match the respirator to the hazard, fit-check it, and keep facial hair clear of the seal. A flimsy paper mask is not a respirator.
    • Read the label and the Safety Data Sheet. Under WHMIS 2015, hazardous products carry labels and a 16-section Safety Data Sheet that names the hazard and the controls. Use them, especially before spraying anything containing isocyanates.

    Get a baseline, and watch for the early signs

    Because lung damage is silent for years, a baseline lung check and regular follow-up are the best way to catch trouble early, and they give you the record a future claim depends on. See a doctor if you notice a cough that will not clear, breathlessness on jobs that never used to wind you, wheezing, or symptoms that ease on your days off and return at work, which is a classic sign of occupational asthma.

    Work-caused lung disease is claimable

    Silicosis, occupational asthma, asbestos disease and other work-caused lung conditions can be workers' compensation claims through your provincial board: the WCB in most provinces, the WSIB in Ontario, and CNESST in Quebec. Because the latency is long and the cause must be tied to work, an occupational-disease claim is harder than an acute injury, so build the evidence: list employers, sites, the materials and the years, keep any air-monitoring or baseline test results, and see your doctor to document the work link. Even retired and former workers can claim, and dependants may be able to claim after a death from occupational lung disease.

    Common mistakes

    • Dry-cutting concrete or stone. It is the single worst avoidable lung exposure on a site. Water or extraction, every time.
    • A paper mask for silica work. A nuisance dust mask does not protect against fine respirable dust. Use a fitted respirator of the right grade.
    • Cutting into an old building blind. Assume asbestos until a survey clears it. One unguarded cut can be the exposure that counts.
    • Ignoring a cough or a wheeze. A cough that lingers, or breathlessness that is new, is worth a doctor's visit, not a shrug.
