Some of the most serious health risks in the trades are the ones you cannot see, smell or feel at the time, and that do not show up for decades. Asbestos, respirable crystalline silica, diesel engine exhaust and welding fume are all recognised causes of cancer or serious lung disease, and the harm builds quietly over years of ordinary work. The two things that matter are: protect yourself now, because the dose you breathe today is what counts in twenty or thirty years; and if you do fall ill from a workplace exposure, a work-caused disease can be a workers' compensation claim with your provincial board. This guide explains the main exposures, why the long delay matters, and how a claim works.
Why the delay is the whole problem
The hard part of occupational cancer is latency: the gap between exposure and disease can be twenty, thirty or forty years. A carpenter who cut old asbestos board in their twenties may not be diagnosed until retirement. That delay does two things. It makes the danger easy to ignore on site, because nothing hurts today. And it makes a claim harder to prove later, because you have to connect an illness now to work you did a lifetime ago. Both problems have the same answer: take the exposure seriously while you are still being exposed, and keep a record of where you worked and what you worked with.
The main exposures
- Asbestos. Found in older buildings: insulation, floor tiles, textured ceilings, pipe lagging, cement board, some adhesives. Disturbing it releases fibres you breathe deep into the lung, where they cause asbestos-related lung disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma. There is no safe known level; the work is tightly regulated, with a national exposure limit set very low and a survey required before renovation or demolition of older buildings.
- Respirable crystalline silica. Released by cutting, grinding, drilling or breaking concrete, brick, stone, tile and engineered stone. The fine dust scars the lung (silicosis) and is a recognised cause of lung cancer. It is controlled to a low airborne limit that varies by province, using water suppression and on-tool dust extraction.
- Diesel engine exhaust. From generators, compressors, plant and idling vehicles, especially in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Recognised as a cause of lung cancer with long-term exposure.
- Welding fume. The metal-oxide smoke from welding contains substances, including some forms of manganese and hexavalent chromium, linked to lung cancer and to nerve damage. The hotter and more enclosed the work, the worse the exposure.
How to cut the dose
You cannot undo an exposure, but you can keep the lifetime dose low, and that is what determines your risk:
- Stop the dust and fume at the source. Water suppression and on-tool extraction for silica; local exhaust ventilation or fume extraction for welding; never dry-sweep silica dust, which just puts it back in the air.
- Survey before you disturb. Assume older buildings contain asbestos until a survey says otherwise. Never cut, sand or break suspect material without proper assessment and controls.
- Use the right respirator, fitted and worn. A loose or wrong-grade mask is close to no protection. Match the respirator to the hazard and get a fit check.
- Read the label and the SDS. Hazardous products carry WHMIS labels and a Safety Data Sheet that tells you the hazard and the controls. Use them.
- Move engines and idling plant outside, and ventilate enclosed spaces where exhaust collects.
If you get ill: the workers' compensation route
A cancer or lung disease caused by a workplace exposure can be a workers' compensation claim, the same system that covers a fall or a crush injury. You claim with your provincial board: the WCB in most provinces, the WSIB in Ontario, and CNESST in Quebec. An occupational-disease claim is harder than an acute-injury claim because of the latency and the need to show the exposure was work-related, so the practical steps are:
- Report it and see your doctor. Tell your doctor the work history; ask them to note the suspected occupational link.
- Build the exposure history. List employers, sites, the materials and the years, even roughly. Old pay records, union records and co-workers all help.
- File with the board promptly once you have a diagnosis, and ask about their occupational-disease process. Some diseases are recognised in policy as presumptively work-related for certain trades, which can ease the proof.
Even retired and former workers can claim, and in the event of a death from an occupational disease, surviving dependants may be able to claim. Do not assume it is too late.
Common mistakes
- Treating "no symptoms" as "no harm". The damage is silent for decades. The mask matters most on the days nothing feels wrong.
- Dry-cutting concrete or stone. It generates the worst silica exposure of all. Water or extraction, every time.
- Cutting into an old building blind. Assume asbestos until a survey clears it. One unguarded cut can be the exposure that counts.
- Keeping no record of where you worked. Your work history is the evidence a future claim depends on. Keep it.
