Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases in the trades, and the cruel part is that it is permanent. The tiny hair cells in your inner ear that pick up sound do not grow back; once they are damaged by loud noise, the hearing they carried is gone for good. It is also completely preventable. If the noise on your site is loud enough that you have to raise your voice to be heard at arm's length, it is loud enough to be doing damage. This guide covers how the damage happens, the exposure limits that frame the rules, the protection that works, and the fact that work-caused hearing loss can be a workers' compensation claim.
How the damage happens
Loud sound is energy, and too much of it kills the hair cells in the cochlea. Two things drive the harm: how loud the noise is, and how long you are in it. A short burst of very loud noise (a nail gun, a powder-actuated tool, a sudden bang) can damage hearing instantly. Steady loud noise (saws, grinders, breakers, compressors, planers) does it gradually, day after day, so slowly that most people do not notice until conversations get hard and the television creeps up loud. By then the loss is established and irreversible. Tinnitus, a constant ringing or hissing in the ears, often comes with it and can be just as wearing as the lost hearing.
The exposure limits, in plain terms
Provincial health and safety law sets occupational exposure limits for noise, and while the exact numbers differ a little by jurisdiction, the framework is the same across Canada. Exposure is measured as an average loudness over the working day, and most provinces set the limit around 85 decibels (dBA) averaged over eight hours, with action required at or above that level. The key idea is the exchange: every few decibels louder roughly halves the safe time. So a noise that is safe for eight hours becomes unsafe in a fraction of that time once it climbs. Many common power tools sit well above the limit, which is why ear protection on site is the norm, not the exception. Check your own province's noise regulation for the exact limit and action levels.
Protection that actually works
- Wear hearing protection whenever it is loud, not just when someone tells you to. Earplugs, earmuffs or both for very loud work. Both together for the worst noise.
- Fit matters more than rating. A plug that is not rolled down and inserted properly, or a muff that does not seal over a hard-hat strap, gives a fraction of its rated protection. Learn to fit them right.
- Cut the noise at the source where you can. Quieter tools, sharp blades, good maintenance, sound barriers and keeping people back from the loudest work all reduce the dose.
- Mind the time, not just the volume. Rotating out of the loudest tasks and taking quiet breaks lowers your daily average.
- Protect your hearing off the job too. Loud music, firearms and loud hobbies add to the lifetime dose your ears carry.
Get your hearing tested
Because the loss creeps in unnoticed, a baseline hearing test and regular checks are the only way to catch it early. Many employers in noisy industries run audiometric testing programs; if yours does not, ask your doctor. A test will not bring lost hearing back, but it can flag damage before it gets worse and gives you a record that matters for a claim.
Work-caused hearing loss is claimable
Noise-induced hearing loss from work is a recognised occupational disease, and you can claim it through your provincial board: the WCB in most provinces, the WSIB in Ontario, and CNESST in Quebec. Boards often have a specific process for hearing-loss claims, sometimes with hearing-aid coverage and a record of your noise exposure history. Because the loss builds over years, a history of your noisy jobs and any audiometric test results are the evidence that supports the claim, so keep them.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until it is loud "enough". If you have to shout at arm's length, the damage is already possible. Protect from the first loud minute.
- Treating earplugs as optional comfort. They are protection, and the loss they prevent never comes back.
- Bad fit. A plug barely in the ear or a muff broken by a hard-hat seal protects far less than its rating. Fit it properly.
- Ignoring early ringing. Tinnitus or muffled hearing after a shift is a warning. Tighten up your protection and get tested.
