You do not need a provincial licence to install batt, blown or rigid insulation anywhere in English Canada. Insulation installer is a voluntary trade: no certificate is legally required to insulate a wall or an attic for hire. The one exception is Quebec, where construction-sector insulation work generally needs a CCQ competency card (the Commission de la construction du Quebec runs its own system). The thing that does carry real, separate requirements is spray foam: spray polyurethane foam (SPF) installers usually need manufacturer or industry certification and proper respiratory protection, because the chemistry is hazardous to apply. Get your code R-values right, treat spray foam as its own specialised stream, and carry liability insurance.
Licensing and certification: voluntary, with two real caveats
For batt, blown-in and rigid board insulation there is no licence to start across English Canada. The Red Seal credential here is Heat and Frost Insulator (Mechanical), which covers the mechanical-insulation side (pipes, ducts, industrial systems) more than residential thermal insulation. Red Seal is one of Canada's 54 designated trades; it is an endorsement, not a licence, and it is optional for residential work. Compulsory-versus-voluntary status varies by province, so check your province.
Two caveats matter:
- Spray foam is specialised. Spray polyurethane foam installation generally requires manufacturer certification or recognised industry training, controlled application conditions, and serious respiratory protection (supplied-air or appropriate respirators). It is not a casual add-on to a batt operation. Treat it as a separate, certified stream.
- Quebec. For construction-sector insulation you generally need a CCQ competency card, and the contracting entity needs an RBQ licence. Treat that as compulsory if you work in Quebec.
Code you build to
Insulation is where the building code's energy rules bite hardest, and getting the numbers wrong fails inspection on a permitted job:
- Minimum R-values. Provincial building codes set minimum effective thermal resistance (R-value or RSI) for attics, walls, basements and exposed floors, and these have been rising. The required value depends on the assembly and the climate zone, so check your jurisdiction's current code.
- Air and vapour control. Insulation works with the air barrier and the vapour retarder. Getting the vapour control on the wrong side of the assembly, or breaking the air barrier, causes condensation and mould, which is your liability.
- Fire. Foam insulation generally needs a code-compliant thermal barrier (such as drywall) over it in occupied spaces. Leaving foam exposed where a barrier is required is a code failure.
Kit and start-up costs (estimates, CAD)
Batt and blown-in insulation is one of the lower-barrier trades to enter; spray foam is far more capital-heavy. Indicative ranges, so confirm current prices:
- Hand tools, knives, staplers and PPE: roughly $500 to $1,500.
- A blowing machine for loose-fill (buy or rent): rent at roughly $100 to $300 per day, or buy used from a few thousand dollars up.
- Respiratory protection and full PPE: roughly $500 to $2,000, more for spray-foam supplied-air systems.
- CGL insurance: roughly $2,000 to $4,000 per year.
- A van or trailer: roughly $10,000 to $25,000 used.
- A spray-foam rig (only if you go that route): a major capital outlay, typically tens of thousands of dollars; lease or subcontract at first.
A realistic first-year operating estimate for a batt and blown-in operation lands around $18,000 to $40,000. A spray-foam operation is materially higher.
What you can charge (estimates, not fixed rates)
There is no single published national rate table for insulation installers in Canada, so treat the following as general estimates that vary by region, material and access, not fixed prices. Attic top-ups and blown-in work are usually priced per square foot of area or per bag of material installed; wall and basement insulation is priced per square foot of assembly. Spray foam commands a clear premium over batt because of the equipment, the certification and the material cost. Hourly labour for small jobs tends to sit in the same broad band as other finishing trades, higher in the GTA and Vancouver and lower in the Prairies and Atlantic Canada.
Because published rate data for this trade is thin, build your price up from your own costs: material, labour, equipment and a margin, and confirm against local competitors before you commit.
Common mistakes
- Missing the code R-value for the assembly and climate zone. It fails inspection on a permitted job and the values have been rising.
- Getting the vapour control wrong. Vapour retarder on the wrong side, or a broken air barrier, leads to condensation and mould callbacks.
- Treating spray foam as a casual add-on. It needs certification, controlled conditions and proper respiratory protection.
- Forgetting GST/HST. Once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive quarters (or in a single quarter), you must register for GST/HST within 29 days of the effective date.
