    There is no specific provincial licence to do concrete and foundation work anywhere in English Canada. It is a voluntary trade in licensing terms. But structural concrete (footings, foundation walls, columns) on any permit-required project is inspected by the municipal building department and must conform to the National or provincial building code and to the engineer's specifications. Two activities pull in a Professional Engineer: underpinning and helical piers almost always need a P.Eng. stamp on the drawings. And anyone running a concrete pump or boom truck needs the relevant commercial-vehicle and operator certifications. Get your footing depth right, hit the concrete spec, and the inspector is your friend, not your enemy.‍‌‌‌‌​‌​​‌‌‌​‌​​​​​‌‌‌​​‌‌‌​‌‌‌​‍

    Licensing and certification: voluntary, but heavily inspected

    You do not need a licence to pour concrete, but the work is governed by the building code and by inspection. On permitted projects the building official will check that structural concrete conforms to the code and to the engineered drawings. The judgement calls that need a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) stamp are underpinning and helical (screw) piers, which in most provinces require engineered drawings. Pump and boom-truck operators carry equipment and commercial-vehicle certifications that are separate from any trade ticket.

    Footing depth: the non-negotiable

    Frost heave destroys foundations, so minimum footing depth is set by the code and by your region's frost penetration. As a guide (Ontario Building Code figures, with the National Building Code baseline elsewhere), minimum footing depths run roughly:

    • Southern Ontario (Toronto, Hamilton): about 1.2 m.
    • Central Ontario (Barrie, Kingston): about 1.2 to 1.4 m.
    • Ottawa Valley: about 1.4 to 1.5 m.
    • Northern Ontario (Sudbury, North Bay): about 1.5 to 1.6 m.
    • Far North (Thunder Bay, Timmins): about 1.6 to 1.8 m.
    • Nova Scotia (National Building Code baseline): about 1.2 m minimum.

    Check your own jurisdiction's figure, because it varies. A frost-protected shallow foundation (FPSF) is an engineered alternative that uses rigid foam insulation to redirect the frost line, allowing footings as shallow as 300 to 400 mm. It must be engineered and approved by the local authority having jurisdiction, but it can cut excavation cost sharply in cold climates.

    Concrete spec you have to hit

    The building code sets minimums that the inspector will enforce:

    • Footings: at least 20 MPa concrete (25 to 32 MPa is common in practice); at least 150 mm thick for a single storey, 200 mm for two storeys.
    • Foundation walls: at least 150 mm poured concrete (builders typically use 200 to 250 mm).
    • Weeping tile (a perimeter drain) is required around all footings.

    Kit and start-up costs (estimates, CAD)

    Concrete is a tool-and-vehicle trade more than a machine trade if you rent the heavy gear. Indicative ranges, so confirm current prices:

    • Concrete tools (screeds, floats, trowels, edgers): roughly $1,500 to $3,000.
    • A vibrator (electric or gas): roughly $800 to $2,000.
    • A mini excavator: consider renting in year one at roughly $600 to $1,200 per day rather than buying.
    • A transit or laser level: roughly $500 to $1,500.
    • CGL insurance: roughly $3,000 to $7,000 per year.
    • A work truck and trailer: roughly $25,000 to $50,000.

    A realistic first-year estimate, renting rather than buying the excavator, lands around $30,000 to $60,000.

    What you can charge (estimates, not fixed rates)

    There is no single published national rate table, so treat these as indicative ranges that vary by region, access and soil. Across the country a basic slab-on-grade pour runs roughly $10 to $17 per square foot, while a finished pad runs roughly $15 to $30 per square foot installed (the GTA at the higher end, the Prairies and Atlantic Canada lower). Decorative and stamped finishes run roughly $20 to $40 per square foot.

    • Concrete pad: roughly $15 to $30 per square foot installed.
    • Slab-on-grade pour: roughly $10 to $17 per square foot.
    • Basement foundation: around $35 per square foot; a crawlspace around $15; pier-and-beam around $10.
    • A full home foundation: averages around $9,300, with a typical range of roughly $5,500 to $20,400.

    Confirm your numbers against local quotes, since soil conditions and access move these figures a lot.

    Common mistakes

    • Pouring footings too shallow for the frost line. Frost heave will crack the foundation, and the depth requirement is not negotiable with the inspector.
    • Missing the engineer's stamp on underpinning or helical piers. Those need a P.Eng. on the drawings in most provinces.
    • Cutting the concrete spec or skipping weeping tile. The code minimums are a floor, not a target.
    • Forgetting GST/HST. Once taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive quarters (or in a single quarter), you must register within 29 days of the effective date.
