Heat pump installation is the busiest growth area in residential trade work in Canada, and getting into it properly means three things: holding the right trade and refrigerant certifications, getting onto the provincial program-registered contractor lists, and understanding where the demand actually sits. The work itself sits across HVAC, electrical and sometimes plumbing, and the rebate programs that drive most of the volume only pay out when a registered contractor installs an eligible unit. What the work involves
A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, so it both heats and cools. The common install types are:
- Air-source ducted: a central system replacing a furnace, tied into existing ductwork.
- Ductless mini-split and multi-split: wall or ceiling head units, common in homes without ducts.
- Cold-climate air-source: units rated to keep useful output well below freezing, which is what makes them viable across most of Canada.
- Ground-source (geothermal): the largest and most involved install, with a buried loop field.
The job spans refrigerant work, the electrical connection and circuit, condensate and sometimes plumbing, and the mechanical mounting. On a fuel switch you are also decommissioning the old oil tank or gas appliance. Most homes also need their electrical service checked, because adding a heat pump (and often an EV charger later) can exceed a 100-amp panel. Lead with that load check.
The two certifications you must not confuse
There are two separate credentials, and people mix them up:
- The trade qualification is the Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic apprenticeship: code 313A (commercial and industrial systems) and 313D (domestic and commercial). These are occupational qualifications earned through apprenticeship and the trade exam.
- The environmental certificate is the provincial ozone-depletion (ODP/ODS) certification you need to actually buy and handle refrigerant. It is a separate one-day course and exam, run by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) for most provinces, by MOPIA in Manitoba, and under Quebec's own framework. It is generally transferable between provinces, but renewal rules differ: Ontario requires renewal every five years under its Ozone Depletion Prevention certificate, and a lapse means retaking the full course.
You need both. The trade ticket says you are qualified; the refrigerant certificate is what legally lets you handle the gas. The full detail is in Refrigerant and Everyday Environmental Rules.
The program-access certifications
Beyond the trade and refrigerant tickets, the rebate programs that drive most heat pump volume require the installing contractor to be on their registered list. The recognised skills courses that feed those lists are the TECA Quality First Heat Pump course (Technical Excellence Centre Association) and HRAI's heat pump training and certification, both recognised nationally and required or preferred by several provincial programs. Getting onto each province's approved-contractor list is a separate registration step on top of holding the course (see Becoming a Registered Program Contractor).
Where the demand is
Demand follows the fuel being replaced and the funding available:
- Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador): the strongest oil-to-heat-pump market in the country because oil heating is common, served by Efficiency Nova Scotia, NB Power, efficiencyPEI and takeCHARGE plus the federal OHPA. Some streams have wound down as funding was used, so demand is strong but program status changes.
- Ontario: large, organised demand through the Home Renovation Savings Program, delivered with Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy.
- British Columbia: CleanBC Better Homes and the income-qualified Energy Savings Program drive steady work; from 1 June 2026 the installer must be a Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member for the rebate.
- Quebec: its own programs (LogisVert through Hydro-Quebec, with the Renoclimat advisor process), requiring an RBQ-licensed contractor.
- Prairies (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta): more modest provincial rebates plus federal OHPA. Alberta has no confirmed province-wide residential heat pump rebate at the time of writing.
The money discipline
The rebates are what make this work flow, but they are the most fast-moving thing in the whole trade, so this guide quotes no dollar figures. Programs and amounts change frequently, so check the current offer at the program's own page before you quote a client. Confirm three things every time: the program is open and funded, you are a registered contractor for it, and the exact equipment model is on its eligible-product list (an unlisted model voids the rebate no matter how good it is). The federal OHPA is the one major program with no required home energy evaluation: the installer signs an attestation instead. Common mistakes
- Confusing the trade ticket with the refrigerant certificate. Your 313A or 313D is not the ozone-depletion certificate. You need both.
- Installing before the panel is checked. Many homes cannot carry a heat pump on the existing service. Do the load calculation first.
- Ordering an unlisted unit. If the model is not on the program's eligible list, the rebate is gone. Confirm before you order.
- Starting before pre-approval. Several programs disqualify any work begun before written approval.
