    What the law actually says

    • Sole proprietors and partners are taxed on their net business profit at graduated federal and provincial rates under the Income Tax Act. If your net tax owing tops $3,000 ($1,800 in Quebec) two years running, the CRA expects quarterly instalments, and once your revenue passes $30,000 in four consecutive quarters you must register for and charge GST/HST.
