Work out the mileage you can actually claim, without CRA pushing back.

For sole proprietors and subcontractors who drive to site. Compares CRA simplified rates against actual costs and tells you which one leaves you better off.

If this is your first claim this tax year, leave this as 0.

This uses CRA's simplified mileage rates for self-employed people with their own car or van. It's an estimate of your business expense for tax - not cash paid to you by CRA.

    What counts as business mileage?

    • Travelling between jobs, sites, customers, or suppliers
    • Going to the supplier or the dump for a specific job
    • Visiting a client to quote or inspect

Normal commuting to a permanent workplace does not count.

    What the law actually says

    • The CRA sets prescribed per-kilometre rates each year for claiming the business use of a personal vehicle under the Income Tax Act, and the calculator above uses the current rates. Either way you must keep a logbook recording the date, the odometer readings, the distance and the reason for each trip; travel between home and your regular workplace is personal and cannot be claimed.
