Electrical & Gas Permit Authorities by Province

Who you actually pull an electrical or gas permit from is not the same body in every province -- and sending a gasfitter to the wrong one wastes a day. The authority for the provinces where it is non-obvious.

    Permit authority (non-big-four provinces)

Saskatchewan (SK) TSASK -- all trades (electrical & gas)
Manitoba (MB) -- electrical Manitoba Hydro
Manitoba (MB) -- gas permits Office of the Fire Commissioner (NOT ITS or Hydro)
New Brunswick (NB) -- electrical NB Power (wiring permits)
New Brunswick (NB) -- inspection Technical Inspection Services (TIS)
Nova Scotia (NS) Nova Scotia Power Inspection Services
Newfoundland & Labrador (NL) Service NL
Territories (NT/NU/YT) territorial safety / inspection offices

    Watch this one

    • In Manitoba, gasfitter LICENCES come from ITS but the gas PERMIT is issued by the Office of the Fire Commissioner -- two different bodies
As of 2026 -- confirm before relying on it. In Ontario, BC, Alberta and Quebec the authorities differ again (e.g. ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, TSSA for gas in Ontario). Confirm with the specific authority before pulling a permit.
